Gathering Prey Review:

If you are a fan of John Sandford’s Prey series then you are familiar with how he starts his story off. The story starts off his usual way, getting right to business with setting the scene, with the characters who are involved and their perspectives on the events.

Skye and Henry are two Travelers, who lead a modern day nomad lifestyle and travel from city to city. They meet Letty, Lucas Davenport’s adopted daughter while she is a student at Stanford college.

Letty becomes friends with these two Travelers after she buys them some food at McDonald’s. She gives Skye her phone number and asked her to look her up when she is in the neighborhood.

On returning home to Minnesota from college, Letty gets a call from Skye. Skye is fearful for her life and is hiding out because her friend Henry has gone missing and she believes that someone is trying to kill them.

Lucas Davenport goes along for the ride when Letty decides that she will go to Skye and help her. Once Davenport hears Skye’s story he believes her.

The hunt and chase for the bad guy starts!

Finding the killer in the midst of traveling gang who operate on the periphery of society is no easy task. The chase for the killer, who leaves a trail of violent killings, takes Lucas over many States. Will Lucas be able to catch this elusive killer?

Gathering Prey Recommendation:

I was recommended  to author John Sandford a few years back by Arlene.  Thank you Arlene for introducing me to another author that I like!

I have been looking forward to doing the Gathering Prey book review because I like John Sandford’s  Prey series.  I have read quite a few of his Prey series books and have enjoyed reading them all.

I have not read that many crime/detective books and getting into the Prey series was fantastic because I knew that his books do not disappoint! I would like to call myself a fan but I have not read his other works to be classified as that.

John Sandford’s Gathering Prey is his latest book on the Prey series, of which there are now 25, including this one. His  prolific work include the Virgil Flowers series (8 books), The Kidd series (4 books), The Singular Menace (2 books), Etcetera (4 books) and 3 Other novels. I am hoping to read those too someday!

Like other John Sandford’s Prey series books, Gathering Prey is easy to read and is a page turner in most part. His books have a great pace and they entice you to read more! This is why I like to read; because of the more

Sandford’s books are known for its suspense and mystery and he doesn’t fail to deliver in the Gathering Prey book. Gathering Prey is not one of his best Prey series book that I have read but it is still a very good read.

I recommend you to read Gathering Prey. It is a great thriller. It contains twists and turns to give an exciting suspenseful story.

The plot is interesting and it is action packed so you don’t have time to be bored. The story starts off on a normal pace and ramps up all the way until the end of the book. It’s a roller coaster of suspense that you will enjoy.

  1. I’m not a big fan of John Sandford but it does look interesting. Sounds like a big cop and rob chase and not much character development.

When is his next prey book out?

    1. Hello Susan.
Funny you should ask when is John Sandford next prey book is out! Extreme Prey was just recently released on April, 26th 2016. I will be picking up a copy to read for my to be read pile.

I like his books even though you don’t get the character development in the book. For me, the Prey series books build upon his character with each book and I love the pace of his book. They have all be page-turners and so easy to read. There’s always so much action going on that you don’t have to time to be bored.

I hope this new prey book is in the same vein and does not disappoint.

If you are interested in looking at Extreme Prey by John Sandford you can take a look here at Amazon’s link.

  2. I’ve been a Sandford fan for a long time now. Not from the beginning, but back before he branched out and started writing the Virgil Flowers novels. I’ve always been incredibly impressed with his sense of style and pacing, his fresh bursts of humor, his sharp dialogue and complex characters.

There isn’t a more reliable author than JS. None of his books disappoint. If you haven’t read his stand alone novels, Dead Watch is excellent. The VF books are really something. Rough Country and Bad Blood are two of the best novels he’s written.

As a side note, if you follow Sandford on Facebook, he writes the most wonderful posts. The guy is in his 70s, and he readily admits he doesn’t know anything at all about modern technology. Like many aging Baby Boomers, he doesn’t seem to know that FB is really designed for posting pictures and short, stupid blurbs, and so instead he writes posts that are pages and pages long…and they rock! His kind of unfiltered thoughts and musings are really entertaining and insightful. He is also, as it turns out, starting a book club on FB.

Anyway, I really appreciated the review you wrote, as well as the review about The Art Forger, which I now have to go find a copy of. Great website!

    1. Hi Tyler,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts at Arlene’s Book Club.

It’s nice to meet another fan of John Sandford. I have only read the Prey series and have loved them all. They are page turners and I love the pace of his books. None are alike and he has fresh ideas in each book.
Thanks for your recommendations- I will add Dead Watch to my to read list. I would like to read the Virgil Flowers series too but in the order it comes. I hate to miss out on any personal history that the book includes. I had wished that I read the Prey series in order. It’s nice to see the main character progress and how they reached where they are in the books.

Thanks for letting me know that John Sandford is on Facebook. I have started to follow his page. It’s nice to hear that he likes to connect with long blog posts and shares his thoughts with us.

I am glad that you liked our website.

  3. There was a time when I used to read books, mainly because I had to for a school project or because someone highly recommended it. When it is on a subject that I enjoy I will take the time to read, but I mainly do not anymore as most of my time is writing content and doing research for said content.

However at some point when I retire from internet marketing and I have more time on my hands, I can see myself reading this book by John Sanford, it sounds like an interesting story. And if it truly has a style that gets more intense as it moves forward, then that should keep my attention from losing interest. – Great review of the book and the author!

    1. Hi Robert,
      Thanks for your comments.
I can understand that you don’t have the free time that you would like and I too find my time is limited.
For me I try to make the time to read as I find it very relaxing and it helps me unwind and take the strain of the day away.
I hope you find your free time soon 🙂

All the best and thanks for stopping by.

  4. I haven’t read the series…feeling very left out right now. You do such a great synopsis! I’m sold on this one, I love me a good crime story. Will definitely read this before this year ends 🙂

    1. Good to hear May that you will be picking up Gathering Prey to read.

    1. Hi May,
      thanks for stopping by!
John Sandford is well known for his books like Stephen King is well known for his books.
I would recommend you to pick one of John Sandford’s books and give it a try. I think you’ll be nicely surprised!

  5. I love to read, specially some leadership books.
I’m not sure if the book will interest me, thanks to your review, it has guided me to choose it or not….
I like your site, I will come back later for sure.

    thank you 🙂

    1. Hi Dragon,

  6. I just don’t have the time to read non-fiction anymore, what with everything else going on at WA. This sounds like an amazing read and you have done it justice with another great review. Really well done, thank you!

    1. Hi Retiree,
you would think that being retired you would have all the world to read but I guess that is not always the case. I have not had time to read a book either and would just love some time just to read.
I have started The Art Forger by B A Shapiro and I am enjoying it and would love to spend the rest of the day reading it but life calls….

Thanks for stopping by and please do drop by again!

  7. As usual, you create some great reviews on books that you have read and want to share with us.

This Gathering Prey book sounds so appealing to read. I like the crime/detective books and movies. My girlfriend may even love this read more that I do.

Thanks again Dinh for this and keep on writing good reviews like this one.

    Jason.

    1. Hi Jason,
flattery will get you everything! Thanks for the nice compliment but I am my worse critic.
I am glad that you may like to read Gathering Prey. John Sandford has his particular style and somehow he writes with a good pace so it’s always a good read. Who doesn’t like light entertainment?

  8. Hi Dinh,

Thanks for the review. I have read a couple of John Sandford’s books in the past and they are really hard to put down. They keep you on the edge of your seat. It’s nice that you can purchase this book to your Kindle and even Audio format. That is my preferred way to read books.

Which one of John Sandford’s books would you recommend first if you haven’t ever read one of his books?

    1. Hi Garen,
thanks for your comment. I agree with you that John Sandford’s Prey books are page turners. They are so easy to read and the pace is great so you just keep on reading!
I haven’t done an eBook before but I do like audio books for long journeys in the car. However, audio books are not the same as when you read a paper book. I like my mind’s voice to understand and imagine the book. When someone reads it aloud to you it doesn’t have the same effect.

I would recommend reading the Prey series books from the beginning with Rules of Prey. I would have liked to have done that because it give you the history and background to the main character Lucas Davenport.

  9. Hi Dinh
Thank you for reviewing this book. It sounds like a real page turner. Is Lucas Davenport the main character of all the Prey books? Is he a policeman or something? I am really curious, so maybe I’ll just get the book and find out!
    David

    1. Hi David,
thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Lucas Davenport is the main character for all John Sandford’s prey series books. Lucas works for the Minneapolis BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension) and in Gathering Prey he crosses many state lines to catch the killer.
I hope you enjoy the book!

  10. Hi Dinh, another wonderful review – I do look forward to reading what you’re going to recommend, or not. I have read a couple of his prey books, but it was so long ago I honestly don’t remember which ones. I think it’s time to go back to the beginning and start again, in order. These are the types of books I’m addicted to – murder, suspense, mystery…. As you know I’m using your recommendations to expand my horizons. Keep ’em coming!!

    1. Hi Hindy,
so nice to hear from you again!
I didn’t read John Sandford’s Prey series book in order when I first started reading his books but I think it would have been nice as you get to know Lucas Davenport’s his history and the background to how he became this great ‘detective’ solving cases.
When I have some time one day maybe I will go to the first Prey book and read them chronologically.

  11. I’m so glad I came across your website, Dinh. I’m an avid reader too and I’m always looking for good books to read just for pleasure.

What a great review! I don’t read to many of these types of books. I did appreciate your summary of this. Thanks for this review. I may take a look into his book a bit more seriously after your review.

    Julie

    1. Hi Julie,
I was only introduce to author John Sandford a few years back and normally I do not read this type of book.
I am glad I picked up his book and gave it a try because he is a good read even though this genre is not my kind of thing.
You may be surprised that you like Gathering Prey!
      Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Hi Ashley!
Thanks for your nice compliment on my review of Gathering Prey.
I think you will enjoy reading the book. It has a great pace and I found it easy to put down and pick up where I left off. The only warning I would give to you is that it contains some graphic violence.

I appreciate you dropping by and taking the time to leave a comment!

  15. Hi Dinh,

I am not that into novels, I spend to much time reading nonfiction, but on reading your review of this book, which was a good review by the way, it sounds like the kind of book my wife would love, and would make a great stocking filler for this holiday season, so thanks for your recommendation.

    Rob
