The Little Red Chairs by Edna O'Brien

We will be reviewing The Little Red Chairs along with our monthly book club discussions for October 31st, 2016.

O’Brien prolific works include numerous novels, short stories, drama, poetry and non-fiction books.

This is Edna O’Brien’s latest book in over 10 years.
The Little Red Chairs is about a woman’s struggle to get back her life after betrayal. Set in Ireland, then to London and to the Hague. This book looks at the darker side of humanity as well at the light.

New York Times praises O’Brien for “celebrated gifts of lyricism and mimetic precision.”

Washington post says ” In the end, what leaves one in humbled awe of The Little Red Chairs is O’Brien’s dexterity, her ability to shift without warning – like life – from romance to horror, from hamlet to hell, from war crimes tribunal to midsummer night’s dream. And through it all, she embeds the most perplexing moral challenge ever conceived…”

It looks like an interesting read and I am looking forward to reading it.

  1. Hello Dinh, the Little Red Chairs by Edna O’Brian appears to be a good book to read. Going by how you said the author was praised by New York Times and the rest. But I think you should have told the story in the book as an intro, just like you usually do.

Nevertheless, it is a great book even though I was yearning to hear more like an excerpt of the book.

    1. Hi Nnamdi!
I usually try to add a summary of the book in our usual book reviews.
On our monthly suggested book club reading I just post the praises it gets from various reviewers. Perhaps I should have done a little bit more on the intro of the book. Thanks for your suggestion!

I was thinking the same when I read “mimetic precision.” It was actually more like ‘what?’ These fancy reviewers!

I’ve just started the book so I haven’t got to the intriguing parts yet.

I do miss your thoughts about this book though because I like to know more about the history before I know if I want to read the book.

And your thoughts are valuable to me. I like the way you write.
