About Arlene

WELCOME TO ARLENE’S BOOK CLUB!!Arlene

I hope you are like me. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember. It is actually quite simple. I LOVE BOOKS! I admire and have the utmost respect for a writer who can have a thought and an idea about a story, fact or fiction, research everything and anyone about the idea and then bring it all to life on the pages of a book. All of us who love the written word get to go on the journey with the writer. The locations around the world, the history, the characters all coming together for us readers to share the experience and the journey.

A little about me. I am a wife, a mother of 4, a grandmother of 7. I worked in the field of Medicine in the NICU of a major hospital before I got married and briefly after my first son was born. I was a stay at home mom for 18 years. I then worked in the field of Real Estate Administration and then in the field of insurance – legal and personal insurance claims. When I was living my life during all of the above, I did not have the time to read as much as I do now. I retired almost 3 years ago so I have more time now to enjoy my love of books.

I have a broad and varied range of interest. My personal favorite is historical fiction. The inter-twining of historical fact along with a great story and interesting characters is what I enjoy most. I also adore medical thrillers, mysteries, the classics, political thrillers and the occasional family themed novel.

I also look forward to reading the autobiographies that have piled up under my desk at home while I was working. I guess I will pretty much read anything. My house is full of books – my family can attest to that!

So if you are like me, where you finish one book and have another all picked out and right there, ready to start after you have completed the emotions and feelings of the last, join me and let’s go on another adventure together.

  1. Hi Arlene!

I hope you are doing well and having fun reading. I came across your blog from google and wanted to see if you wanted to collaborate. I’d love to be included in your list of Poetry reviews!

I recently self published my first Poetry book and I wanted to ask if you would be interested in reviewing it? I would be so appreciative of any help in getting my book started. I hope to gather some momentum 🙂 Here are the details below…

  2. Request for a book review.
My name is Michael Mattia and my novel, “Cobra Kingdom”, is 412 pages and was self-published on Amazon early November 2020.at https://amzn.to/3qQ1VYj
It can also be found on Goodreads at, http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/20990066.Michael_A_Mattia

“Cobra Kingdom”, is Historical Fiction, Murder Mystery, Suspense, and a bit of Fantasy set during Royal the 18th Dynasty in Ancient Egypt. Pharaoh Amenhotep III ruled (1386 to 1349 BC) along with his Great Wife, Tiye. Amenhotep’s only son, Thutmose nicknamed Mose by the Pharaoh, along with his chariot instructor were ambushed by unknown assailants and left for dead. When Mose disappears the beginning of a great evil dawns over the Empire and deadly magical cobras come forward in an attempt to protect the Pharaoh and save the Kingdom.

While the Nile River delivered life sustaining water and fertile soil throughout the Kingdom, it started to also deliver death, young pregnant concubines were washing ashore. Tiye’s father, YUYA, a principal advisor to the King, investigates and suspects the women are casual sex partners of the Pharaoh. Someone in the palace wants to eliminate these mothers before an infant is born and becomes the heir apparent.

The extensive documented history of the period forms the backdrop of the novel while the fiction is interwoven seamlessly. The story includes the origin of the ancient Kingdom, inception of the Creator stories, detailed preparations of royal wedding feasts, the operation of the Women’s House, and military horse and chariot training.

The novel is available in the following e-book formats: Word, PDF, and Mobi.

Thank you for your consideration of my novel for a review.
    Sincerely,
    Michael Mattia.

  3. Dear Arlene,

I feel so touched by how each of you writes about your love of books on this blog! I thought I would write to you, your son, and Dinh each separately in case you have different reviewing interests.

I am writing to see if you would be interested in reviewing my literary historical fiction novel Boy, Falling, to be published by Black Rose Writing on July 22, 2021.

Boy, Falling is a stand-alone companion book to my novel House of Rougeaux (Raincloud Press, 2018), which was named one of Bitch Media’s 25 Must Read Books of 2018, won a Silver Medal IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award for Historical Fiction, and earned excellent reviews including a Starred Review in Publisher’s Weekly for the audiobook.

Boy, Falling follows the Rougeaux family line (begun in House of Rougeaux) through the eyes of three family members. Set primarily in the interwar period, in New York City and Paris, Boy, Falling is historical fiction with a focus on Black History, that also includes a strong LGBTQ storyline and contains elements of magical realism.

    The back cover will read:

Seeking to pursue his dream in music, and harboring a grave secret, young Gerard Rougeaux leaves his native Montreal for New York City in 1909, embarking on a journey that then takes him to Paris at the height of the Jazz Age. There, years later, Gerard becomes haunted by strange dreams of a boy falling through space, as his story entwines with the family he has left behind—his half-sister Jeannette and her two children, struggling to make their way in New York after the economic crash of 1929. Continuing the family epic begun in House of Rougeaux, Boy, Falling weaves together human yearning and mystery, and what it means to be part of the fabric of life.

Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you!

    Sincerely,
    Jenny Jaeckel

    1. Hello Jo. Nice to meet you…thanks for your comments..Dinh is the driving force in our book club…creator, administrator, fabulous reviewer and a bookworm like us. 4. Hi Arlene,

I have subscribed to your emails and I love what the three of you are doing. I am reading more esoteric books that probably have little interest to others. Like: The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, The Arms of Krupp and River of the Golden Ibis. I have also written a book that I am trying to promote: Dear Willy, The True Story of a Life Well Lived. That said, can your site helping me in my marketing journey?
    Thanks, Claire

  5. Imagine finding another Arlene who is also obsessed with books. Those who know this Arlene are quite aware that without a book to read and one or two in-waiting, this good natured, kind person turns into a demon. Addicted to books is what I am and am always filled with delight when I come upon another who shares my need for books. I lead a couple of book clubs and feel responsible for having spread my addiction to others over the years. I look forward to being a member of your Book Club, Arlene.

    1. Hello Arlene It is fun to know another Arlene shares my passion of reading. I started reading at a very young age and until this day cannot imagine not having a pile of books waiting for me to choose the next one. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts on our book club. Dinh is the book master here running the show and wanted to name the book club after me. We have shared our thoughts together on many books through the years and Decided to share our love of books by creating a place where others can share their thoughts on our selections. We look forward to hearing from you!!

  6. Hello T.F. Pruden,
Thank you for your warm wishes!

Thank you for offering your book in return for an honest review.
At the present time we are not accepting these requests. Should this change we will contact you.

I thank you for your suggestion and hope you all the best!

  7. Hi Arlene;

Congratulations on the beautiful site and all the best to you and yours in 2016!

I’d like to submit an electronic copy of my first novel ‘A Dog and His Boy’ to you for consideration for a review. Though self-published the sins of the father narrative set in the nineteen seventies is a literary work you may find a worthwhile read. Thanks very much for your consideration.

    TFP
