1. Do you feel, after reading this book, that most people hide their “True Colors” in order not to hurt the feelings of other people?

2.Do you feel you know the “True Colors” of your own family members and close friends and do you question them in your own mind? Do you ever question your own “True Colors”  and do you want to change your life at times to improve your opinions of other people?

3. “What is passion? It is surely the becoming of a person…. In passion, the body and spirit seek expression…The more extreme and the more expressed that passion is, the more unbearable does life seem without it. It reminds us that if passion dies or is denied, we are partly dead and that soon, come what may, we will be wholly so.” This was the quote at the beginning of the book, how does this relate to the title True Colors? Is passion at the base of this book? Why do you think the author chose this quote?

4. If you have sisters, do you feel Kristin Hannah truly expressed how complicated and intimate the sister relationship can be?

5. Did you appreciate how Kristin Hannah brought you to this ranch and property where you could envision it in your mind’s eye as you read along..and if so, did that help you understand the deep feelings this family had for their land and property and their horses?

6. Vivi Ann was such an interesting and dominant character in this story. Did you see her strength grow as the story unfolds and did she impress you as she got older?

7. At the end of the book did you appreciate how Kristin Hannah developed the character of Noah throughout the story?

9. Did you think this was a clever way of bringing into the story the feelings of this young boy that impacted this family so much?

10. Did you feel after reading this novel that the father had a strong part in shaping the lives of his daughters or do you feel their mother, even though she died early on, played the stronger role in the lives of these sisters?

11. Discuss the impact of their absent mother on Winona, Aurora, and Vivi Ann separately and collectively. What were their perceptions of their mother?

12. What are the sisters perception of their father Henry? What sort of relationship does he have with his daughters?  What sort of person is he? Who understands him the best? Does he love his daughters? Does he change over the course of the book?

13. Do you think Kristin Hannah was successful in keeping you engaged in the story with the way she structured the book and the setting?

14. Which sister could you relate the most to?

15. If you have never read a Kristin Hannah novel before, do you feel compelled to read all of her books after reading True Colors? If you are thinking about reading another of Kristin Hannah’s novels which one would you choose?

  1. “Do you feel, after reading this book, that most people hide their “True Colors” in order not to hurt the feelings of other people?” I haven’t read this book, yet. But, this question calls to me to respond to it. I think considerate people will. And, where are they? 😀

    1. Someone once said to me “everyone wears a mask”. That statement has stayed with me until this day. Personally I can honestly say I never want to hurt someone’s feelings so better not to say anything at times. You never know what might be going on in someone else’s life even someone very close to you.
