The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

Please join us in reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead for our suggested book club monthly reading!

We will be reviewing The Undergrond Railroad along with our monthly book club discussions questions for February 28, 2017.

The Underground Railroad is the winner of the National Book Award for 2016, #1 New York Times Bestseller, and was in the top 10 best books in 2016 from the New York Times Book Reviews.

Here’s what being said about the book.

NPR says:

“With this novel, Colson Whitehead proves that he belongs on any short list of America’s greatest authors–his talent and range are beyond impressive and impossible to ignore. The Underground Railroad is an American masterpiece, as much a searing document of a cruel history as a uniquely brilliant work of fiction.”

People says:

“Think Toni Morrison (Beloved), Alex Haley (Roots); think 12 Years a Slave…An electrifying novel…a great adventure tale, teeming with memorable characters…Tense, graphic, uplifting and informed, this is a story to share and remember.”

Washington Post says:

“Far and away the most anticipated literary novel of the year, The Underground Railroad marks a new triumph for Whitehead…[A] book that resonates with deep emotional timbre. The Underground Railroad reanimates the slave narrative, disrupts our settled sense of the past and stretches the ligaments of history right into our own era…The canon of essential novels about America’s peculiar institution just grew by one.”

I am super excited to read this historical fiction book!

I have not read any books about American slavery so it will be interesting to read about it.

The story is about a slave girl named Cora and her journey from slave state Georgia to The North, where slavery is not accepted.

  1. It sounds really interesting, and it must be good if it managed to win that award last year! I hope you’ll really enjoy reading this one, and I can’t wait to hear what you think about it 😀

    1. Hi Olivia!
I think this is a good choice to read as it was highly praised. It was also on Oprah’s book club and Goodreads Choice Award for best historical fiction for 2016.
I hope the book lives up to all the praises!

    1. Hi Lonna!
I may have to rethink what I like to read best as I have been reading more historical fiction/fiction than any type of genre.
I hope the book lives up to the hype!
